mywaywardcupcake replied to your post “Hey! Since it’s Grandpa’s birthday, and I already did this with Yugi…”
What about the first time Grandpa loses a game to Yugi?
Sugoroku chuckled when he saw his tiny grandson come into the room, holding a deck of cards in his hands, along with a very familiar looking box. “Heh, still trying to see if you can beat your old grandpa at his best game?”
Yugi nodded, looking as determined as he always did. That’s what Sugoroku liked to see with the boy, the look of a gamer who wasn’t afraid to keep trying to win, even when the odds were against him. He’s taught the boy well.
“Alright, let’s get the game going. Poker, yes?”
Again, Yugi nodded. “I wanna shuffle the deck today, Grandpa.”
“Go right ahead.” Sugoroku replied, pushing a few items aside on the coffee table so Yugi could set the deck down. He watched as the smaller Mutou carefully shuffled the deck, making sure to never damage the cards. That was a lesson he was taught a long time ago, always take good care of your cards, this way you know they trust you and your luck will increase ten fold.
Once the deck was shuffled, Yugi set it down and smiled. “Let’s play! And with a prize, as always!” He gestured to the box he had set on the tablet before he shuffled.
From their very first game together, Sugoroku always had a prize set for Yugi, one that Yugi has been trying to win since he was two.
It was the golden box that the old man kept on a shelf in his room, one that Yugi’s been entranced with since he was an infant.
Sugoroku always told Yugi that he could have the box if he won it in a game, he had to beat his grandfather at one single game.
And Yugi’s been trying for most of his life.
The hands were drawn and the game began, with Sugoroku’s bag of candy covered chocolate as the chips.
It was always best two out of three, and the first round when to Yugi, but the second to Sugoroku.
The older Mutou chuckled and looked at his hand. “Well, looks like I win again, Yugi. Four of a Kind.” He set his cards down four eights and a queen.
Yugi glanced at the golden box before he looked at him and Sugoroku felt like his heart stopped for a moment, those normally bright, orchid eyes of his grandson were crimson in color, burning with a stare of victory.
A small smirk came to Yugi’s lips before he smiled normally, eyes orchid once more, then he set his hand down.
“Royal Flush.”
Sugoroku blinked, staring at the hand. It was, indeed, a Royal Flush. In all his years of gambling, of gaming, the old man had never lost a single game.
Until today.
He chuckled and then laughed loudly and happily. “Ho oh! Yugi, my boy! You bested me good, and with the best hand in the game!” He reached over, ruffling up that spiky hair the Mutou clan always had. “You earned your prize, the Millennium Puzzle.”
He had always known that Yugi was meant to inherit the God Puzzle, but before he could be tested by the spirit of it, Sugoroku needed to test if Yugi was ready for the most difficult game in the world.
And with this win, he was.
